City moat 城塹 (僉厭 fanqie; the Zuozhuan has: "Trenching the gate of the defense and guarding it"; the Zhoushu has: "Guarding without canals or moats"; another text says: "Danger to the city walls"; the Shuowen says: "A moat (ge 圪)"; it is composed of 土 with 斬 phonetic; 圪 is pronounced 語訖 fanqie).
