階梯 (the upper character is pronounced 皆 [jie]. The Kaosheng states: 'Steps to ascend a hall.' The Shuowen states: '階 means steps; formed from radical 𨸏 with 皆 as the phonetic.' The lower character is pronounced with the fanqie 體𠔃 [ti + xi]. Jia's commentary on the Guoyu states: '梯 means steps.' The Shuowen gives the same gloss as Jia Kui; it is a phonogram).
