The *Guangya* says: “棘 means thorns.” Du [Yu]’s commentary on the *Zuo zhuan* says: “棘 means resembling halberds.” The *Gujin zhengzi* says: “Clump-growing small jujube trees; it is composed of doubled 朿.” In the collected edition it is written with the grass classifier as 蕀, which is incorrect. The lower character is pronounced with the fanqie *ci* + *si*.
