遞互（上亭禮反或作递亦通考聲云遞代也郭璞注爾雅云更易也楚辭曰四時遞來而卒歲王逸曰更相代也字書遞交也從辵丑略反虒音梯聲也經文作[遞-虎+(?/巾)]俗字也下胡固反韻詮云互差也象懸互中有𮫙別也經作㸦俗字誤也非正體字也）。

Alternating and mutual: the upper character has the fanqie *ting* + *li*. It is also written as 递, which is also acceptable. The *Kaosheng* states: '遞 (*di*) means to substitute.' Guo Pu's commentary on the *Erya* states: 'To alternate and change.' The *Chuci* states: 'The four seasons arrive in alternation, bringing the year to a close.' Wang Yi states: 'They alternate and take turns.' The character dictionary states: '遞 means mutual exchange.' It has the motion radical (辵, pronounced *chou* + *lüe*) and 虒 (pronounced *ti*) as phonetic. Sūtra texts writing it as [遞-虎+(?/巾)] are using a popular character. The lower character has the fanqie *hu* + *gu*. The *Yunquan* states: '互 (*hu*) means disparity; it depicts interlaced hanging objects with differences between them.' Sūtras that write it as 㸦 are using an erroneous popular character, not the standard form.
