The Baihu tong says: 'The gall bladder is the palace of the liver. The liver governs benevolence; the benevolent person suffers from being unable to bear [causing harm], hence one uses the gall bladder to make decisive resolutions; therefore a benevolent person must possess courage.' Wang Shuhe's Maijing says: 'The gall bladder governs the spirit; when the gall bladder is diseased, then the essence and spirit are not maintained.' Hence we know this).
