擔負（都南反集訓云擔亦負也謂擔負物也從扌音手詹音占聲也文字釋要云詹字從厃牛毀反從八從言經文從木作檐非也檐音葉占反屋檐字也非經義下浮缶反顧野王曰背恩惡德曰負韻銓云受貸不償曰負說文負恃也上從古人下從貝人守寶有所恃也經文從刀作負非也）。

擔負 (都 + 南 fanqie. The Jixun says: '擔 also means to carry on the back, meaning carrying goods on the shoulder or back.' It takes 扌 (pronounced 手) as semantic and 詹 (pronounced 占) as phonetic. The Wenzi shiyao says: 'The character 詹 takes 厃 (牛 + 毀 fanqie), 八, and 言.' The scripture writing it with 木 as 檐 is incorrect; 檐 is 葉 + 占 fanqie, the character for the eaves of a house, which is not the scripture's meaning. The lower character is 浮 + 缶 fanqie. Gu Yewang says: 'To turn one's back on kindness and display vicious conduct is called 負.' The Yunquan says: 'Receiving a loan and not repaying it is called 負.' The Shuowen says: '負 means to rely upon.' The top takes the ancient form of 人 [person] and the bottom takes 貝 [cowrie]; a person guarding a treasure has something to rely on. The scripture writing it with 刀 as 負 is incorrect).
