麋鹿 [elaphure and deer] (The first is fanqie: 美 + 悲; the Shuowen says: "A species of deer." The second is fanqie: 力 + 木; the Shuowen says: "A game animal, depicting horns, limbs, and four legs; birds and deer have feet resembling spoons, hence it takes two 匕." The Shixun commentary of the Duke of Zhou says: "Deer live in mountains and forests, belonging to yang animals; thus in the fifth month, affected by the emergence of a single yin, their horns shed. Elaphures live in streams and marshes, belonging to yin animals; thus in the eleventh month, affected by the emergence of a single yang, their horns shed." The current sūtra text writes 麑 [fanqie: 五 + 奚], which is incorrect: *suanni* [fanqie: 蘇 + 官] is a lion; since the preceding text already mentions lions, it is improper to mention *suanni* again, so we know for certain it is a mistake, an errant writing of 麋 as 麑).
