縱橫（上足庸反下獲萠反說文作從考聲爾雅縱長也竪也橫廣也左右方也韓詩云南北為從東西為橫說文橫欄木也從木黃聲也）。

縱橫 (The upper character is z-[u]-y-[ong] fan; the lower is h-[uo]-m-[eng] fan. The Shuowen jiezi writes it as 從. The Kaosheng and the Erya say: '縱 means long, vertical; 橫 means broad, horizontal, lateral directions.' The Han Poems say: 'North-south is vertical (縱); east-west is horizontal (橫).' The Shuowen jiezi says: '橫 is a crossbar of wood; it derives from 木 [wood] with 黃 [huáng] phonetic').
