Pools and lakes (陂湖: [first character pronounced] bi-mei fan [bēi]. The Guiyuan zhucong says: "A marshy barrier," meaning that earth is piled up to stem and hold back water. Note that when there is water in a grassy marsh it is called a bei [pool]. The lower character is pronounced hu. The Shuowen says: "A large bei is called a hu [lake]." Note that in Wu and Yue there are Qingcao and Dongting, both of which are large lakes).
