鹹酢 (salty and sour): The upper [character] is *xián* (洽緘反 [ɦˠɛm]), the *Erya* says: "鹹 is bitter." The *Kaosheng* says: "The taste of water." The *Shuowen* says: "鹹 is to hold in the mouth; it takes the halogen radical 鹵 (*lǔ*) with 咸 as its phonetic." In the current sūtra text it is written with the wine radical as 醎, which is an error, though it is also accepted in popular usage. The lower [character] is *cù* (麤素反 [t͡sʰuoᴴ]), the *Cang Jie pian* says: "酢 is sour." The *Shuowen* says: "It is pickled (醶), also pronounced *hǎn* (減反); it takes the wine radical with 乍 as its phonetic." Nowadays popular usage uses it for toast-and-response (酬酢, *zuò*, 藏各反 [d͡zɑk̚]). The sūtra text writes it with 昔 as 醋, which popular transmission uses for the character meaning "sour" (酸酢). The pronunciation *zuò* (昨) for 酢 runs contrary to the *Shuowen*. The two characters are interchanged inconsistently: the *Shuowen*, *Yupian*, and *Zitong* all pronounce 酢 as *cù* (倉固反 [t͡sʰuoᴴ]) and 醋 as *zuò* (音酢), whereas the *Qieyun* and contemporary vulgar usage invert the above pronunciations, with 醋 being *cù* (麤素反 [t͡sʰuoᴴ]).
