Gandharva (健達縛; Sanskrit of an unrefined form. In Tang language it is "incense-eater"; because they nourish themselves with incense, they are also called "spirits who feed on fragrance", or "incense-sniffers", or "fragrance-seeking spirits". Some say they dwell on fragrant mountains; some say their bodies emit rare fragrance. Those who say "music spirits" are translating by meaning. Older forms were gandharva (乾闥婆) or gandhava (乾沓和); these are merely differences in lightness and weight of accent among various regions).
