Fierce and harsh (猛勵; pronounced li-zhi fan [l-]: The Mao Commentary on the Book of Odes says, "Li means fierce/wicked." Zheng Xuan says, "Violating governance to do evil is called li." Du's commentary on the Zuo zhuan says, "Li means fierce." The Posthumous Titles Law says, "Cruel, arrogant, and without kin is called li; slaughtering without measure is called li." In the sūtra text it is written with the "strength" radical as 勵, which is a mistaken substitution. The Shuowen jiezi says it is formed with the "cliff" radical (厂, pronounced hu-dan fan) with wan (萬) as phonetic).
