甘膳 (chán-zhàn [fanqie: 禪戰反]; the Zhouli says the royal chef [膳夫] consists of two upper servicemen in charge of the king's cooked meals; Zheng Xuan says 膳 is cognate with shàn [善, good], and fine foods today are called delicacies [珍膳], the royal chef being the head of the dietary officials; Kaosheng says when the five flavors are all excellent it is called 膳; Shuowen jiezi says preparing meals, having 肉 as radical and 善 as phonetic; the sūtra text writes it with 食 as 饍, which is a popular character and not the standard form).
