魔鬼（上音摩本是梵語略也正梵音麼莫可反羅唐云力也即他化自在天中魔王波旬之異名也此類鬼神有大神力能與修出世法者作留難事名為麼羅以力為名又略去羅字）。

魔鬼 The first character is pronounced mo [mó]. It is originally an abbreviation of a Sanskrit word. The correct Sanskrit sound is mā (m- + -o- / -k'â [mā]), ra, which in the Tang language means "power." It is an alternate name for the demon king Pāpīyas in the Heaven of Paranirmitavaśavartin. Spirits of this class possess great supernatural power and can create obstacles for those who cultivate supramundane dharmas; thus he is named Māra, taking his name from "power." Here, the character ra has also been omitted.
