法鼓（公五反經文鼓字由來多誤或從皮作皷俗字也或從支普卜反作鼓乃是蜀字皆非也說文從壴竹句反從支音止而反象旗手擊之）。

法鼓 The second character is pronounced k- + -u / -uX [gǔ]. The character 鼓 in sūtra texts has long been written erroneously; some write it with "skin" as 皷, which is a popular form; some write it with 支 [p- + -u / -ok] as 鼓, which is actually the character shǔ [蜀]—both are incorrect. The Shuowen jiezi says: "Derived from 壴 (pronounced zh- + -u / -uH) and from 支 (pronounced zh- + -ɨ / -eX), depicting a hand striking it beside a standard."
