The Mao commentary to the Shijing says: 'The contents of the dou vessel.' Zheng's Jian commentary says: 'Pickles and minced meat sauce.' The Kaosheng says: 'Dried meats, savory dishes, pastries, and fruits.' The Shuowen jiezi says: 'To eat.' It is formed with the flesh radical 肉 and yao 爻 as phonetic; in vulgar use written as 餚. The second is pronounced shan 善; Zheng Xuan says: 'Shan 膳 means good (shan 善); fine food today is called shan.' The Shuowen jiezi states that it is formed with the flesh radical 肉).
