棘刺（上矜嶷反說文從並二朿朿音次經從二束訛也下音次說文從刀從朿經從夾非也棗音早重二朿俗從二朿非）。

Brambles and thorns (棘刺: the upper character [brambles (棘)] is 矜 [jin] + 嶷 [yi] [jí]. The Shuowen jiezi says it is composed of two side-by-side 朿; 朿 is pronounced 次 [cì]. In the sūtra, it is written with two 束, which is erroneous. The lower character [thorns (刺)] is pronounced 次 [cì]. The Shuowen jiezi says it is composed of the knife radical (刂/刀) and 朿. The sūtra writing it with 夾 is incorrect. Date (棗) is pronounced 早 [zǎo], with one 朿 doubled atop another; vulgar scripts writing it with two side-by-side 朿 are wrong).
