鬚髮（上音須俗字也本字只作須說文從頁頁頭從彡音衫彡眾毛也時用須字從水作湏非也湏乃是古文[(水/水)*頁]字也音悔下蕃韈反顧野王云首上毛也說文髮根也從髟犮聲也古文作頗頁音頡犮音蒲末反髟必遙反）。

Beard and hair (鬚髮: the first character is pronounced xu; it is a popular character; the original character is simply written as 須; the Shuowen says: 'Composed of 頁; 頁 means the head; with 彡, pronounced shan; 彡 means numerous hairs'; nowadays people write 須 with the water classifier as 湏, which is incorrect; 湏 is actually the ancient character for [(水/水)*頁], pronounced hui; the second character has the fanqie fan + wa; Gu Yewang says: 'Hair on top of the head'; the Shuowen says: 'Roots of hair'; composed of 髟 with 犮 phonetic; the ancient script writes it as 頗; 頁 is pronounced xie; 犮 has the fanqie pu + mo; 髟 has the fanqie bi + yao).
