試鍊（蓮奠反非本字正作柬考聲云精擇也或作揀俗字也今經文作鍊鎔鍊金鐵字也非本字亦通）。

To test and refine (鍊 has the fanqie 蓮奠 [lián + diàn]; not the original character, which properly is 柬; the Kaosheng says: 'To select carefully'; also written as 揀, a vulgar character; in the present sūtra text written as 鍊, the character for smelting and refining gold and iron; though not the original character, it is also accepted).
