In older sūtras it is sometimes called "eradicating-man" and "eradicating-woman", and also "diligent man" and "diligent woman"; now we say bhikṣu and bhikṣuṇī. According to Sanskrit, *bhikṣu* is translated here as "mendicant", which shares the same meaning with "eradicating famine": it refers to eradicating the hunger of the six senses and severing the defilement of greedy desire. Because one diligently cultivates through wholesome dharmas, it is also called "diligent cultivator man" and "diligent woman").
