雜穀 (Zágǔ, assorted grains: the upper character has the fanqie Cai-he [zá], and was already fully explained in the eighth fascicle of the previous Sounds and Meanings. The lower character has the fanqie Gong-wu [gǔ]. The Zitong says: 'Gǔ means continuation. Names of grains number in the hundreds, but all return to five: namely broomcorn millet, foxtail millet, beans, wheat, and hemp. The broomcorn millet class is called ear grain; the foxtail millet class is called loose grain; the bean class is called pod grain; the wheat class is called awned grain; the hemp class is called stalk grain. Thus they are called the five grains.' The Shuowen says: 'Gǔ is the collective name for the hundred grains. It takes its classifier from 禾 and is phonetic in 殼 [qiào]').
