To analyze and dissect (剖析; the first character is [pronounced with the] fanqie pǔ + [h]òu. Kong's commentary to the Shangshu says: “Pǒu means to break open.” Du's commentary to the Zuozhuan says: “To divide down the middle.” The Shuowen says: “It takes dāo ‘knife’ as semantic classifier and pǒu as phonetic.” Pǒu is [pronounced with the] fanqie tōu + [k]ǒu. The second character is [pronounced with the] fanqie xīng + [y]ì. Kong's commentary to the Shangshu says: “Xī means to divide.” The Shuowen says: “To split wood; it is an associative compound character.” Some write it as 折, which is a vulgar character).
