Peddle and trade (𧷮賈: the first [character] is shi-yang fan; Zheng [Xuan]'s commentary to the Rites of Zhou says: "Selling while traveling is called 𧷮." The Kaogongji says: "Distributing the treasures and rarities of the four quarters is called 𧷮." Zheng Xuan says: "Itinerant merchants are called 𧷮旅." The Shuowen jiezi says it derives from radical 'cowrie' [貝] with 商 abbreviated as phonetic; 販 is pronounced fan-fang fan. The second [character] is gong-wu fan; in the sūtra it is written as 估, which is a vulgar character. Zheng [Xuan]'s commentary to the Rites of Zhou says: "Selling from a fixed shop is called 賈." The Erya says: "賈 means a market." Zheng Xuan says: "Sitting and selling; valuing goods high and low." The Hanshu yinyi says: "Selling when prices are high and buying when they are low; sitting and selling to seek profit." Those who pronounce it as jia-ya fan are mistaken).
