矬醜 [Dwarfish and ugly]: The first character is read with the fanqie 藏 [c-] + 螺 [-uó] (cuó). The Guangya says: '矬 means short.' The Kaosheng says: '矬 means dwarfish (矮).' The Shuowen lacks it. The standard form in the Gujin zhengzi is 𰦟. The Jixun says: '䂑 means short; formed from 矢 (arrow) with 坐 acting as phonetic.' The scripture's character 矬, though colloquial, is an ancient character. The second character is read with the fanqie 犨 [ch-] + 帚 [-ǒu] (chǒu). The Mao Commentary to the Classic of Poetry says: '醜 means repulsive.' Examining this: 醜 means not dignified and majestic; a countenance that is ugly and not beautiful. The Shuowen says: 'Abominable; formed from 鬼 (ghost) with 酉 acting as phonetic.' 矮 is read with the fanqie 櫻 [y-] + 解 [-ǎi] (ǎi). 䂑 is read with the fanqie 㽵 [zh-] + 解 [-iě] (zhe). 犨 is read with the fanqie 齒 [ch-] + 周 [-ōu] (chōu). The ancient form of 坐 is formed from 从; 从 is pronounced like 從; one source says it is an abbreviation of 留.
