悲惻（楚力反考聲云惻愴悲痛也孟子曰若無側隱之心者非人也鄭注周禮云痛之至也說文從心則聲或作𢝔古字也）。

悲惻 [Grief and sorrow]: Read with the fanqie 楚 [ch-] + 力 [-ì] (cè). The Kaosheng says: '惻 means grieved and heartbroken.' Mencius says: 'One without a mind of commiseration (惻隱) is not human.' Zheng's Commentary on the Rites of Zhou says: 'The utmost of pain.' The Shuowen says: 'Formed from 心 (heart) with 則 acting as phonetic.' Or written as 𢝔, an ancient character.
