(The upper character has the fanqie y- + l- [yù]. The Picang states: '鬱 is the appearance of smoke emerging.' The Erya states: '鬱 means vapor; 鬱然 is the appearance of vapor emerging.' Mao's commentary on the Classic of Poetry states: '鬱 means accumulating.' Zheng's commentary on the Kaogongji states: '鬱鬱 means congested and not dispersing.' Du's commentary on the Zuozhuan states: '鬱 means stagnated.' The Guangya states: 'It means hidden [幽].' The Shuowen jiezi states: 'It is a fragrant herb, curcuma [tulip]. It is boiled and blended to brew fragrant herb wine [鬱鬯] in order to bring down the spirits. It takes 臼 (fanqie g- + l- [gōng]), 冖 (fanqie m- [mì]), [午/止] (fanqie b- + g- [bù]), 𱞑 (fanqie ch- [chàng]), and 彡 (fanqie sh- [shān]), where 彡 is an ornamental stroke.' In the sūtra texts it is mostly written with 林, 艮, and 寸 as 鬱, which is incorrect; having no authoritative source, it has long been an erroneous corruption. The lower character has the fanqie zh- + l- [zhēng]. The Kaosheng states: '蒸 means to advance; to fumigate; dust.' The Shuowen jiezi states: 'It is fire's vapor rising upward. It takes radical 艸 with 烝 as phonetic.' It is also written as 蒸, with identical meaning).
