發軫（上方襪反考聲云發動也起也舉也去也說文䠶發從弓癹箭發聲也癹音普沫反下之忍反許叔重注淮南子云軫轉也義取創轉車輪即分轍也或從田作畛楚辭曰田邑千畛王逸注云畛陌土各趣一途詳製序者文含兩意故雙舉之備其文義也說文井田問陌也形聲字亦會意字也）。

發軫 (first character: fanqie 方襪 [fā]; Kaosheng: "發 means to move, to rise, to raise, to depart"; Shuowen jiezi: "To shoot and discharge; classified under radical 弓 with phonetic component 癹, representing the sound of an arrow being discharged; 癹 is pronounced with the fanqie 普沫 [pō]"; second character: fanqie 之忍 [zhěn]; Xu Shuzhong's commentary to Huainanzi: "軫 means to turn; taken in the sense of first turning the carriage wheel, namely setting out on different ruts"; it is also written with radical 田 as 畛; Chu ci: "'The fields and cities have thousands of balks'; Wang Yi's commentary: "'畛 denotes raised field-paths, each leading to a separate road'"; inspecting the preface's author, the text encompasses both senses, and therefore both are adduced to provide the full textual meaning; Shuowen jiezi: "The paths between the well-fields; a phono-semantic character, and also an ideogram").
