劬勞（上具愚反考聲云勤也鄭注禮記劬亦勞也從力句聲下老刀反周禮事功曰勞字書勞倦也說文云用力者勞從力從熒省聲也）。

Toil and labor (the upper character is [pronounced with the fanqie] 具 + 愚. The Kaosheng says: 'Diligent.' Zheng's commentary on the Liji says: 'Qu also means labor; it takes the power radical with qu as phonetic.' The lower character is [pronounced with the fanqie] 老 + 刀. The Zhouli says: 'Achievements in work are called lao.' Character dictionaries say: 'Lao means weary.' The Shuowen says: 'One who exerts effort is lao; it takes the power radical with an abbreviated ying as phonetic').
