染纈（上而琰反愽雅染污也考聲著也說文以繒染為深色也從水杂聲下賢結反文字集略縛繒染之解為文考聲亦謂繫絹而染之為文也古今正字從糸頡聲）。

染纈 (the first character is rǎn, fanqie 而琰 [r- + -(y)em]: The Boya says: 'Rǎn means to stain.' The Kaosheng says: 'To apply.' The Shuowen jiezi says: 'Dyeing silk into a deep color.' It takes the water semantic and zá (杂) phonetic. The second character is xié, fanqie 賢結 [x- + -(k)et]: The Wenzi jilüe says: 'Tying silk and dyeing it, then untying it to form patterns.' The Kaosheng also states: 'Tying silk and dyeing it to produce patterns.' The Gujin zhengzi takes the silk semantic and jié (頡) phonetic).
