棘束 (First character, fanqie: 矝 + 憶. The Fangyan states: all thorny plants that prick people are called 棘 in the region between the Yangtze and Huai rivers. The commentary on the Mao Shi states: 棘 means sour jujube. The Shuowen jiezi states: small jujube bushes growing in clusters; composed with two 朿 side by side; the sūtra manuscript writes it with two 束, which is an error. Second character, fanqie: 雌 + 賜. Gu Yewang refers to sharp thorns on the outside of tree bark. The Shuowen jiezi states: the awn of a tree, a pictograph; the sūtra manuscript writes it with the 'knife' radical as 刺, which refers to stabbing and wounding.)
