The Liji states: 'For major affairs of the state, burnt torches and courtyard bonfires (庭燎) are provided.' Zheng Zhong states: 燎 means a fire torch, made of hemp; set up outside the gate it is called a great torch, set up inside the gate it is called a courtyard bonfire; both serve to provide illumination. It also states: gate bonfires are ground torches. The sūtra text written with the 'metal' radical as 錠 is incorrect. Guo [Pu's] commentary on the Erya states: a 錠 is a kind of hoe. The Guangya states: a 錠 is called a weeder (耨), which is an agricultural implement; this departs greatly from the meaning in the sūtra.)
