(The upper character is pronounced 社 + 遮 [*shé*]. The sūtra text writes it as 虵, which is a vulgar character. The *Shuowen* says: 'Takes the semantic classifier 虫 and 它 as phonetic component.' 它 is pronounced 徒 + 何 [*tuó*]. In ancient times, people dwelt in caves and the open wilderness, and when inquiring after one another they asked: 'Is there no danger (它)?' The lower character is pronounced 香 + 謁 [*xiē*]. The *Jixun* says: 'An insect that stings people.' The *Shuowen* writes it as 蠆, an ideograph depicting a venomous insect. Clerical script writes it as 蠍, taking the semantic classifier 虫 and 歇 as phonetic component. The current sūtra text writes it as 蝎, whose pronunciation actually designates the larva of a longhorn beetle (蝤蠐), not a scorpion. 蠆 is pronounced 丑 + 介 [*chài*]; 蝤 is pronounced 酋 [*qiú*]; 蠐 is pronounced 齊 [*qí*]).
