莖稈（上幸耕反說文云枝主也從草巠聲也下哥嬾反集訓云禾稾也廣雅稻黍莖謂之稈說文禾莖也從禾旱聲也或作䄨經文作幹榦皆非本字）。

莖稈 (The upper character is pronounced 幸 + 耕 fanqie. The Shuowen says: 'The master of branches; it derives from 草 with 巠 as phonetic.' The lower character is pronounced 哥 + 嬾 fanqie. The Jixun says: 'The straw of grain.' The Guangya says: 'The stalks of rice and millet are called 稈.' The Shuowen says: 'The stalk of grain; it derives from 禾 with 旱 as phonetic.' It is also written as䄨. In the sūtra text it is written as 幹 or 榦, neither of which is the original character).
