(The first character has the fanqie *chang* + *zhou* [chòu]. The *Shuowen* states: "When game runs, the one that knows its scent by smell is the dog. Formed with *quan* (dog) and formed with *zi* (nose); *zi* is the ancient character for nose, pictographic." Today, commonly writing it with *si* (death) as 臰 is incorrect. The second character has the fanqie *lan* + *han* [làn]. The *Fangyan* states: "Cooked thoroughly by fire is called *làn*." The *Shuowen* states: "*Làn* means thoroughly cooked. Formed with *huo* (fire) and has *lan* phonetic." Sūtra editions write it with *rou* (flesh) as [月*蘭], which is a clerical error).
