Balustrades and railings (欄楯: also written 闌, pronounced lan [li + han fan]; the second character is [pronounced] shun [shi + yun fan]. The Shuowen states: '闌 is a railing.' The Tongsu wen states: 'Railings are called 楯.' Wang Yi's commentary on the Chuci states: 'Vertical ones are called 檻; horizontal white ones are called 楯; the lattice openings in between are called 櫺. Installing balustrades along the edges of a palace hall serves as decoration and also prevents people from falling.' What is nowadays called goulan [鉤蘭] is this).
