盥掌(公緩反說文盥澡手也案凡澡洒物皆曰盥字體從手臼水臨皿上也臼音居六反經文有更從水作𤃗非也)。

Washing hands (盥掌: [the first character is pronounced] guan [gong + huan fan]. The Shuowen states: '盥 means washing the hands.' Note that in all cases, washing objects is called 盥. The character form is composed of hand (手), mortar (臼), and water over a basin (皿); 臼 is pronounced jiu [ju + liu fan]. In the sūtra text it is sometimes written with the additional water radical as 𤃗, which is incorrect).
