心馳蕩（馳直知反蕩唐朗反廣雅曰馳奔也說文曰蕩放恣也蕩字正冝作愓經本作者時共通用古體又作婸𢠽二體也）。

The mind runs wild and undisciplined (心馳蕩: 馳 is pronounced with the fanqie 直知 [chí]; 蕩 is pronounced with the fanqie 唐朗 [dàng]. The *Guangya* says: "馳 [chí] means to gallop." The *Shuowen jiezi* says: "蕩 [dàng] means dissolute and unrestrained." The character 蕩 should properly be written 愓; the character used in the sūtra text is a common interchangeable form. Ancient forms are also written as 婸 and 𢠽, two variants).
