Aching pain (aching [酸]: fanqie 蘇 + 官; the Shuowen states that 酸 means sour; 楚 is like teeth aching; it refers to the body suffering intense pain and torment that cannot bear touch, just as sourness of the teeth cannot bear contact with things; or it is said that 酸 is like 痠, meaning soreness and ache, while 楚 refers to the bramble switch used for flogging, meaning the pain of being whipped; it is also said that 酸 means injury reaching the bone, and 楚 is like aching gums, signifying that one endures heavy torment penetrating the bone with pain that cannot bear being touched).
