筆削（漢書衛青霍光傳曰削則削筆則筆音義曰削謂刪去筆謂增益也有云治書勘校削而注之謂筆削）。

Editing with brush and knife (The "Biography of Wei Qing and Huo Guang" in the *Hanshu* says: "Where deletion was due, he pared it away; where writing was due, he took up the brush." The commentary on sounds and meanings says: "*Xiao* means to prune and remove; *bi* means to supplement and add." Another source says: "To edit books, collate them, carve away errors, and add notes is called *bixiao*").
