"One hundred lakṣas make one koṭi" (lakṣa [洛叉] means here myriad [10,000]; koṭi [俱胝] means here ten million / yi [億]. Furthermore, according to the calculation method of the Yellow Emperor in this land, there are twenty-three numerical ranks in all: namely, one, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight, nine, ten, hundred, thousand, wan [10,000], yi [100,000], zhao, jing, gai, bu, rang, gou, jian, zheng, and zai. From wan onward there are three classes of numbering methods: the lower system multiplies by tens, the middle system multiplies by hundreds, and the upper system squares the previous number. Now, in this "Chapter on the Asamkhyeyas", the upper counting method is used, so it says that one hundred lakṣas make one koṭi, which corresponds to yi here. Ayuta is zhao; nayuta is jing; the rest can be known by matching them in sequence. Examining this sūtra now: tens, hundreds, thousands, and ten thousands change by tens; from wan to yi it changes by a hundredfold; from yi onward, each takes the previous counting quantity as a unit and counts up until it equals that counting quantity again).
