Lady Māyā (Māyā here means “illusion”; because this bodhisattva practiced solely relying on the Dharma-gate of the wisdom illusion of great vows, she was given this name. As for “Lady,” the Sanskrit text says devī, here translated as “female deva.” According to Zheng’s commentary to the Liji: “The consort of a feudal lord is called a lady [夫人].” The Yupian states: “Addressing a woman as 夫人 is also a title of respect.” Furthermore, 夫 is a fine designation for a man, and a wife becomes complete through her husband [夫], hence called 夫人. In the Western Regions, a king's consort is called devī, and a male husband is called deva).
