Wu suo shimuo 無所適莫 [without partiality or aversion] (Shi 適 is pronounced ding + li [díl. In the Records of Shu, Zhuge Liang says: 'In managing affairs, overturning and dispersing, exchanging and taking are considered beneficial, while having no partiality is considered balance. Human emotions suffer from being close to relatives and distant to strangers; hence the path of partiality and aversion is abandoned. Everyone rejoices when others follow them and dislikes following others; hence the principle of exchange and yielding is abandoned.' The Analects states: 'The Master said: The gentleman in the world has no partiality and no aversion.' The Collected Commentaries on the Hanshu say: 'Shi 適 means to favor; the Erya says: Mo 莫 means fixed.' It means that toward all beings universally, one neither favors anyone with biased closeness nor fixes anyone with biased distance).
