撾打楚撻(撾陟苽反撻他沫反說文曰撾箠也鄭玄注周禮箠擊也楚荊杖也又注周禮曰撻猶杖之荊也撾字從木古體作𥬲)。

"Beating and flogging" (Beating [撾] is zhuā [zhì + gū fanqie]. Flogging [撻] is tà [tā + mò fanqie]. The Shuowen jiezi says: "撾 means a riding crop." Zheng Xuan's commentary on the Rites of Zhou says: "A crop is for striking." 楚 [chǔ] means a thorn-switch staff. His commentary on the Rites of Zhou also says: "撻 is like caning with thorns." 撾 is written with the wood classifier; its ancient form is written as 𥬲).
