大目揵連（揵渠焉反大目揵連者此云採菽氏即此尊者母姓又以尊者有大神通即將二事為號也然母族採綠豆仙之苗裔也）。

Mahāmaudgalyāyana (maud [揵] is pronounced渠焉 [q- + (i)än > qián]. Mahāmaudgalyāyana means here “Bean-Gathering Clan”; this was the surname of the Venerable One's mother. Furthermore, because the Venerable One possessed great supernormal powers, both matters were taken to form his name. His maternal clan was the lineage of the ṛṣi who gathered mung beans).
