慢捍（上蠻諫反孔註尚書云謂輕慢典教也杜註左傳易也顧野王慢易猶輕侮也說文從心曼聲曼音萬經從水作漫音蒲半反非經義下寒爛反考聲扞禦也說文止也版也捍從字旱聲正作扞或從心作忓又從支作[旱*支]並通用也）。

Arrogant and defiant (慢捍) (The upper character has the fanqie Man + Jian [màn]. Kong's commentary on the Shangshu states: "It means to treat the canonical teachings with slight and contempt." Du's commentary on the Zuozhuan states: "To treat lightly (易)." Gu Yewang states: "慢易 means contempt and insolence." The Shuowen states: "Derived from the heart radical 心 with 曼 phonetic." 曼 has the sound wan [màn]. The sūtra text writes it with the water radical as 漫, with the fanqie Pu + Ban [màn], which is not the intended meaning of the sūtra. The lower character has the fanqie Han + Lan [hàn]. The Kaosheng states: "扞 means to ward off." The Shuowen states: "To stop; a shield." 捍 is derived from 旱 phonetic; its correct form is 扞, or with the heart radical as 忓, or with the branch radical as [旱*支], all of which are used interchangeably).
