荊棘 ("thorns and briars": the lower character is the fanqie jiǔ + lì. Thorny trees. Two 朿 placed side-by-side make 棘 [jí]; two 朿 stacked vertically make 棗 [zǎo], pronounced zǎo. 朿 is sounded cì).
