四十八年（謂釋迦菩薩初出家時就欝頭藍仙習四禪八定即以四禪為四十八定為八年也又釋約十二門秤自行教人讚法美人各有四品為四十八年也）。

Forty-eight years (This refers to when the Bodhisattva Śākyamuni first left home and went to the ṛṣi Udraka Rāmaputra to practice the four dhyānas and eight attainments, taking the four dhyānas as forty and the eight attainments as eight years. Another interpretation explains it with reference to the twelve gates, weighing one's own practice, teaching others, praising the Dharma, and praising others, each having four grades, which together make forty-eight years).
