Famine and dearth (飢饉: the former character 飢 is *j[ǐ]-y[í]* fanqie; the latter character 饉 is close in sound to 近. The *Erya* and the *Guliang zhuan* say: "If one grain does not ripen, it is called *qian*; if two grains do not ripen, it is called *ji*; if three grains do not ripen, it is called *jin*; if four grains do not ripen, it is called *kang*; if five grains do not ripen, it is called *dajin*." To ripen means to mature. The five grains are wheat, beans, broomcorn millet, hemp, and panicled millet; see the *Yueling*).
