熏修（上許君反切韻火氣也有作薰字音同是香草非此義也修音息由反玉篇治也飾也經有作脩字非也音同是乾肉脯腊非此義亦非本字也）。

Perfumed cultivation (the first character is pronounced *xǔ* + *jūn* fanqie [*xūn*]; the *Qieyun* says it is smoke vapor. Some write it with the herb radical [薰], which has the same pronunciation but refers to a fragrant herb, which is not the meaning here. 修 is pronounced *xī* + *yóu* fanqie [*xiū*]; the *Yupian* says: "To cultivate, to adorn." Sūtras that write it as 脩 are mistaken; it has the same sound but means dried meat strips, which is neither the meaning nor the proper character.)
