Grasping with the hands and treading with the feet (the Shuowen properly writes 桴 or 抱, both pronounced with the fanqie 鮑 + 交 [bāo]; the Yupian says: "To pull and take." Treading [蹋] is pronounced with the fanqie 徒 + 盇 [tà], meaning to trample and discard. This is a metaphor for crossing the river of afflictions: diligently cultivating the two kinds of wholesome dharmas is the meaning of "grasping", while diligently cutting off the two kinds of unwholesome dharmas is the meaning of "treading and discarding". In the Southern Edition, Lord Xie changed it to "moving the hands and stirring the feet", which, although clever in wording, is deficient and imprecise in meaning).
